Searching for a Civil War Soldier?
Military records, particularly pension files, can teach us so much about our Civil War ancestors, and not just their military service. We can often learn a great deal about their personal lives, and frequently find information about their wives, children, friends, pre-war and post-war careers, and so much more.
What an exciting time this is for genealogical research, especially with regard to Civil War military records. Although very few military records can be accessed onlin, there are many databases, indexes, and other Internet sources which provide important tools, and many new and exciting opportunities for research.
That doesn't mean that the search is always going to be EASY. It will likely prove to be incredibly frustrating at times, but that makes it all the more rewarding when we finally find that missing piece of the puzzle.
This web site will focus on Civil War soldier and sailor research. There are a vast number of related records and Internet sources, but most of the original military records are found at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. We'll cover those records as well as those available from other sources including online newspaper databases.
